Adapted and translated from a French print, popular in the early 19th century. Each step represents a different decade in life, beginning from ‘adolescence’ at 10 years through ‘maturity’ at 40 years to ‘idiocy’ at 100 years. The couple on the top step are 50 years old, the pinnacle of life?
